6th Grade and Connections Assistant Principal

Greetings Parents,

Thank you to all the parents/guardians that were able to make our student-led conferences.  The students did an excellent job sharing their successes, areas of growth, and goals for the remainder of the year.  The students truly benefit from this opportunity.

Next week we will start taking interim assessments.   Please encourage your student to review as this assessment covers material from the beginning of the semester.  The teachers use this assessment to determine areas each student needs to work on in addition to providing students feedback on their current progress.  We will be taking the Milestone State Assessments after spring break, and this interim will help everyone understand what our students need to reach mastery. It is important that all of us work together for our students’ achievement, and you are a vital part of the team.

Please don’t hesitate to let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

The month of March is packed with exciting events for students!

  • Thursday, March 12th is our PBIS celebration. Students will be able to redeem their Star Bucks to participate in a social event and enjoy a 'walking taco'!

  • Thursday, March 12 - Thursday, March 19th is interim testing. Interim assessments mark the halfway point in the semester. Students will be able to show what they've learned since returning from winter break and teachers will use that data to make adjustments to instruction, as needed.

  • Friday, March 20th is Career Day. Students will participate in a career fair to learn more about exciting new careers.

  • Friday, March 27th is SMS Fun Day! For $10 students can participate in carnival-style games, prizes, and concessions. Proceeds will benefit both Relay for Life and the Aimee Copeland Foundation. All payments must be made on MyPaymentsPlus.

  • Monday, March 30th - Friday, April 3rd is SPRING BREAK!

8th grade Comets

We are beginning our 4th quarter of the school year with 43 days remaining. Of those days, we have 10 days of testing and 33 days of instruction. Our teachers are providing engaging lessons for your child and getting them ready for District Assessment Interims – Social studies was last week on March 12, 2020; March 17- ELA; March 18-Science; March 19-Math, 2020, and Georgia Milestones (after spring break).

If you have been invited to participate in a Student Support Team (SST), please attend. This meeting is to allow us as a team to see what additional interventions are needed for your child’s success academically or behaviorally.

Review the promotion criteria with your child to ensure he/she is on the right track for promotion to the 9th grade:

About Promotion to 9th Grade

To earn promotion to the 9th grade, students are required to pass five out of six subjects each semester. Language Arts and Mathematics must be two of the five subjects passed. Should a student not earn promotion to 9th grade, he or she may have the opportunity to attend summer school to learn the AKS curriculum not mastered during the school year. Students may attend summer school for no more than two semester-long classes.

In Georgia, 8th grade students also are required to achieve Grade Level or Above on the Reading and Vocabulary domain of the Language Arts Georgia Milestones End of Grade (EOG) Assessment and achieve the performance level of Developing or higher on the Mathematics Georgia Milestones EOG Assessment. Students who do not meet either of these state promotion requirements may be required to retest after summer school.

His or her English Learner Proficiency Plan guides promotion for an English Learner (EL) or a student with Limited English Proficiency (LEP).

Summer School Dates: June 8-26, 2020.

Thanks for your commitment to the South Gwinnett Cluster and Snellville Middle School. I enjoy working with you and your child (ren). Please do not hesitate to call me at 770-736-4471, or email me at Twanitta.Martin@gcpsk12.org.
