A Message from Ms. Long

Hello Snellville Middle Students and Parents:

I do hope and pray that you and your families are well. The decision to close schools for the remainder of the year is not what we hoped to hear from our Governor a little over a week ago. I must admit that I was saddened to hear that we would not be able to see our students for the rest of the school year.

I was especially saddened for our 8th graders who will not be able to celebrate their final time in middle school and say goodbye to their teachers and friends in person. As a parent of a 2020 high school senior--I really do understand how they are feeling!

As we adjust to our new normal of teaching and learning, I must share how proud I am of the students, teachers and parents of Snellville Middle School. We are all growing in ways we never thought we could and learning how to do things differently---and in some ways better! Thank you for being so awesome!

As we continue with Digital Learning, there will still be bumps along the way. Be patient. Be patient with yourself, your technology and one another. Together as a Snellville Middle School family community we CAN and WILL make it through this time. We are a strong SMS family!

Be sure to reach out to your teachers if you need help with anything. End of year information will be forthcoming including the final exam schedule, returning school items, and more---we are working through plans now. Just be on the lookout for new information via the Comet Connection, school website, teacher emails or on student eClass pages.

Thank you for your continued support and stay healthy and safe!

Katise Long

6th grade parents,

I hope this finds you all safe and well. I truly miss seeing your student's faces each and every day.

Hopefully you and your student have fallen into a routine for Digital Learning Days. The teachers are working extremely hard to support the students during these unprecedented times; however, it is a challenge for us all. If your student hasn't developed a routine, have them help create a schedule that includes many breaks, time for social media, and time to go outside.  I appreciate all of the work you are putting into making this a success at your home. I have two boys in high school, and I am surprised by how much structure, monitoring, and parenting that I need to do just to get them to do the assignments. This is truly an example of our cluster motto this year, "Working Together, Winning Together."

Please do not hesitate to reach out to me via email if I can help you in any way.

Welcome back! I hope your family had a safe and restful spring break. As we continue digital learning students will continue to have opportunities to engage with their teachers virtually. All 7th-grade teachers host online sessions where they model and teach the concepts students are practicing at home. This provides students an opportunity to learn, as (s)he would in the classroom and ask any questions live, which is very similar to the instructional framework that students are accustom to. Students are also encouraged to participate in discussions and office hours for additional help, as needed. Overall, students are engaged and actively participating in digital learning!

Additional notes:

  • Students are expected to complete digital learning assignments and grades are entered into the grade book.

  • Students will not take the district's interim assessment (originally scheduled for the week before spring break) but may have a classroom assessment in lieu of.

  • Parents and students are encouraged to communicate with teachers and administrators with any questions or concerns.

Parents, first I want to thank each of you for your support since March 16 and your continued support as we go forward until the last day of Digital Learning Days. It is very important to communicate with your child about their eClass assignments and to log on to your child’s eClass page and review any assignments your child may have. Teachers are available to assist your child during designated times of the day. They are virtually collaborating with each other as they continue to plan effective assignments for your child during our Digital Learning Days. If you need to communicate with teachers, please send them an email and they will get back with you.

The teachers and I miss the students. Before we left, we were finalizing our 8th grade week and end of the year activities. I know your child is feeling a certain way since they will be moving on to high school next year without our traditional end of the year activities and last day of school.

Continue to practice social distancing and be safe.

Thanks for your commitment to the South Gwinnett Cluster and Snellville Middle School. I enjoy working with you and your child (ren). Please do not hesitate to call me at 770-736-4471, or email me at Twanitta.Martin@gcpsk12.org.
